Beautiful Feet in the Mountains of Myanmar: A Tribute to Ashar
"How beautiful on the mountains are the feet of those who bring good news..." — Isaiah 52:7
Years ago, we asked Maeram to tell us about AhShar, a teacher at Samuel School in the remote mountains of Myanmar. She shared, “I’ve known AhShar for nearly 20 years. We’re from the same small ethnic group. One time she told me her church was visiting Konglangpu, and the next time I saw her, she said she was moving there to teach the children.”
Konglangpu is not an easy place to reach. From the nearest town, the journey takes days—through rough mountain roads and long hikes on foot. During monsoon season, landslides often cut off access entirely. Life is hard, and opportunities are few. Most children spend their days helping in the fields instead of going to school.
When asked why she returned to such a difficult place, AhShar’s answer was simple:
“The children weren’t going to school. My heart was broken. I felt God calling.”
That calling grew into Samuel School—founded through AhShar’s faith and supported by partners like Joana Jones and Asian Children’s Mission.
Fifteen years later, Samuel School is thriving. Children are learning to read, write, and know the love of Jesus. With support from the HOTS food program through IDES, they receive nutritious meals every day. AhShar and her husband, Jungshin, have even opened their home to several students, creating a safe and loving place to grow.
Today, AhShar’s dedication continues to bear fruit—literally. She recently began a cash crop that will help sustain her ministry for the next 20 years.
Her story reminds us that God’s love knows no boundaries. Through faithful hands and willing hearts, the Gospel continues to reach even the most remote mountains.
