In remote parts of Burma like Putao in the Kachin state (the northernmost part of the country), few high schools are available. Furthermore, many students cannot afford the private tutoring that is necessary to prepare for the difficult final exams all students must pass to graduate. Yet high school opens many doors for the few that do finish: the possibility of attending a university as well as the guarantee of a job from the government as long as you have a high school diploma.
ACM founded Leading Star High School to help meet this need: a high-quality private Christian high school that is free to attend for highly motivated students from impoverished families. Students from remote villages in the area travel on foot for days and even weeks to attend the school and stay at the youth hostel.
The students at Leading Star receive some of the best education available in the area. The head teacher has a master’s degree, a rarity in the region. She has been offered many other, more lucrative teaching opportunities, but she stays at Leading Star because she believes it is her calling. ACM provides the school with $200/month.
Leading Star graduates are grateful for the life-changing opportunity to get their high school degrees.
